Research Assistant Professor
The Roux Institute at Northeastern Unviersity
Dr. Andrew Neils is a Research Assistant Professor on the engineering team at Northeastern University’s Roux Institute in Portland, Maine. His research lies at the intersection of materials development, mechanics of materials, and advanced manufacturing, with applications in aerospace, defense, and biomedical industries. Neils applies the process–structure–property paradigm to develop architected metamaterials and corrosion- and oxidation-resistant coatings, spanning polymers, metals and ceramics.
He also leads applied research in additive manufacturing (AM), including generative design and topology optimization, to address challenges faced by manufacturers in Maine, the Department of Defense, NASA, and the broader scientific community. His work spans powder bed fusion, direct energy deposition, and cold spray additive manufacturing.
Neils holds B.S./B.A. in Chemical Engineering and Biology from Bucknell University and a Ph.D. in Materials Science and Engineering from the University of Virginia. Before joining the Roux Institute, he conducted materials research at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston.
